Birth, Marriage and Death Registrations

England and Wales

Civil Registration began in England and Wales in mid-1837 and records were originally organised by quarter. District Registrars collected information from Register Offices, Churches etc and submitted this in a report to the General Record Office in London. The same District organisation is used for both BMDs and Census information. The following table gives the number of entries per year for each of the three events and by clicking on the relevant number (if underlined) you will be taken to the details of those registration entries. If the entry is not yet underlined I have not had the time to upload it yet - specific queries can be answered by email if required.

In these tables the "GRO Ref" column contains a two or three part reference to the centrally held records which must be quoted when ordering certificates - this takes the format Volume/Page or Volume/Page/Suffix.

The "Place" columns contain the county name in it's three-letter "Chapman Code" format - a table explaining these codes and other geographic abbreviations can be found here.

The "Reference" column contains cross-references to trees to be found elsewhere on this website, 7-digit numbers refer to the main section of trees, 8-character entries refer to the section of speculative trees, i.e. those that are not as yet confirmed as entirely correct. Generally speaking the first three digits of the 7-digit number are the tree number (000-010 all refer to tree 100 as well), the 8-character entries start with three alpha characters indicating the county followed by a two digit tree reference. One exception to the above is entries in Births & Deaths beginning 080 - these link corresponding birth and death records for infant deaths not yet included in trees (usually only up to about 5 years old) which allows people to ignore these entries when seeking an ancestor.

For the marriage pages the last three columns and many of the details of spouse's names have been extracted from the various local BMD indices published on-line by dedicated volunteers. My thanks to them all as I could never have accumulated this information any other way.

If you can link any of these references to people in trees I would very much appreciate the information - each entry that is linked to a tree helps other people in two ways, either by guiding them to a tree for their family or by letting them exclude that entry from their research (especially useful with common forenames). Currently only about 6% of births, 4% of marriages and 2% of deaths are placed into their trees.

Anyone is welcome to link to any of these pages, however they should never be copied to another site without specific permission as they are liable to frequent updating as research into these families continues.
