Mary Crabbe [tree 104]

Monday 15th March 1920 - "The Times", London, ENG
A correspondent writes:- Mary Crabbe, the last of her generation, and grand-daughter of George Crabbe, the old parson poet, died at Brighton on March 11 (as briefly announced in the Times of the following day). She must have lived long, but she was young both in looks - fair, arch and unwrinkled - and still more in mind and feeling.
Mary Crabbe was the youngest daughter of the vicar of Bredfield, in Suffolk. The vicar's chief friend was Edward Fitzgerald who wrote most of his "Omar" in the garden. I now have the very little table he wrote it on. Another frequent visitor was Bernard Barton, the Quaker poet, whose only daughter, Lucy, afterwords became Mrs. Fitzgerald. Lucy wrote little Sunday school books, and, I am sure, never understood "Omar Khayyam" nor it's author either. The last time I saw Mary Crabbe she spoke of her girlhood days and of a visit "Mr. Carlyle" paid them at Bredfield, and of how very affectionately he talked of his "good Jane".
